Since 2004 a new topic has begun to emerge in Claudia Pilsl’s work – the socio-cultural landscape of transitive places. More specifically still, Pilsl is looking at the constructed landscape, the artificiality of managed nature and the role of literature in mediating children’s play.
These 21 new photographs are a continuation of an ongoing and larger series entitled ‘Playtime’, parts of which were shown in Austria in 2010 and also presented at the London Art Fair earlier this year.
Playing children form the central motifs of ‘Between Worlds’. The camera looks at how they interact with and adapt manmade structures and naturalistic landscapes. It watches for the moment of a child’s intense physical yet ephemeral presence. Pilsl has read books like Narnia and The Magician’s Nephew to her own young children and her images succeed because they hold both the magic irrational world of childhood and the cultured rational adult world in one place.
This exhibition is supported by Arts Council Austria.
